Science Study finds that Spirulina boosts the Cognitive functions of Children’s Brains

Many of us have heard of Spirulina – the Superfood. A quick type on Google sprawls thousands of websites touting the effects of it on both brain and overall health. Yet what exactly is Spirulina? How does it help our children to attend better cognitive functions?

What is Spirulina

Spirulina is really a blue-green algae which is  a source of dietary protein, B-vitamins, and iron. They are also used for weight loss, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),  diabetes, stress, fatigue, anxiety and depression. There are some claims that Spirulina is also used for protein but really, it does not contain more protein than meat and eggs.

What makes Spirulina Special

Spirulina contains an essential component – GLA (gamma-linoleic acid).

GLA (gamma-linoleic acid – second fatty acid in the omega-6 family) is known for regulating blood sugar and providing important nutrients to the brain; it also exhibits immune-boosting properties. Is it of any wonder that it is found in breast-milk then?

The richest whole-food sources of GLA are mother’s milk, spirulina micro-algae, and the seeds of borage, black currant, and evening primrose. GLA is important for growth and development, and is found most abundantly in mother’s milk; spirulina (as contained in BAC) is the next- highest whole-food source.

Studies

A national study was conducted in Senegal to measure improvements of  the nutritional status of school-age children with the use of spirulina. Children with an average age of 7 years and 7 months from public schools were given 2g of spirulina once daily for two months. Their academic performances were then compared with other children.

On average, the 549 children saw a 10% increase in their academic performance.

There were many studies on how Spirulina also helps to combat dementia and brain damage in older individuals.

Is Your Diet Affecting Your Brain?

Have you ever thought the food that you place into your child’s mouth for consumption? How about yours? Most of the time, people usually thought of diet as a food that we habitually eat. A number of us, due to placement of priority on our figures, have started to become more selective in what we put into our mouth. Yet, many of us forget that food can affect our brains in the long run. In this article, we will be taking a look at 3 current fad diets:

  1. The Vegan
  2. Atkins
  3. Blood Type

1. The Vegan Diet

WHAT: Fruits and vegetable. Does not include meat or animal-derived products such as dairy, seafood, eggs, honey and gelatin

YOUR BRAIN ON THIS DIET: The brain thrives on this diet as dark green vegetables and fruits are extremely high in vitamins, iron, calcium and zinc. They are also high in antioxidants which can stave off Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.  Brain cells cannot repair or regenerate themselves once they have become weak or died. Creatine, that is found in meat, plays a critical role in developing cognition or intelligence.

HOWEVER:  A study at Oxford University in 2008 found that people on a meat-free diet are six times as likely to suffer brain shrinkage. Deficiency of vitamin B12, commonly found in meat, can cause inflammation of the nervous system.

WHAT IT MEANS:  Take vitamin B12, Creatine and calcium to fortify your diet if you are a vegan.

2. The Atkins Diet

WHAT: Cut out all carbohydrates and eat an unlimited amount of protein and fat. Cut out all fruits, beans and vegetable that contains starch.

YOUR BRAIN ON THIS DIET: A healthy brain requires a healthy diet. Complex carbohydrates provide time-released energy for the body to work throughout  the day. The brain uses sugar more (20% of carbohydrates consumed) than any other organ and low blood sugar can slow down brain function.

By eliminating fruits and vegetables, the brain will not be getting enough antioxidants which can protect it from the disease.

HOWEVER:   Some studies have found that the diet also contributes to heart disease, kidney stones and more.

WHAT IT MEANS:  This diet should only be for a short-term plan.

3. Blood Type

WHAT:
• Blood Type O (“the hunter”) should have a high-protein diet and avoid whole wheat completely. O’s are more prone to a sluggish thyroid, weight gain and hyperactivity.
• Blood Type A (“the cultivator”) should not eat any red meat and would benefit from a leafy green vegetarian diet. Type A’s tends to have a more sensitive immune system and should try to avoid smoking.
• Blood Type B (“the nomad”) thrives when consuming meat and dairy products because they have strong digestive abilities, but they are more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases.
• Blood Type AB (“the enigma”) is a hybrid between A and B types. It is suggested that people with this mix should eat fish and stay away from cured meat, since it is linked to cancer. AB tends to have low levels in stomach acids, which can create an overgrowth of certain bacterias.

YOUR BRAIN ON THIS DIET:  The Blood Type A diet generally follows the Vegan diet as stated above and have similar effects. The Blood Type O diet is somewhat similar to the Atkins diet as it includes high amounts of protein. However, scientists found that a high-protein diet shrinks the brain and may even boost risk of Alzheimer’s. It is more beneficial to have a moderate amount of protein than a huge amount.

HOWEVER:   Blood Type Diet is unsupported by scientific evidence.

Early Research suggests Probiotics can Calm Your Child’s Emotional Brain

Most of us know “bacteria” as something that has potential to cause us harm but do you know that some bacteria are really beneficial to us? In fact, most of these beneficial bacteria reside in our guts. This is known as a microbiomewhich really means a huge ecological community of microorganisms that share our body space. Early research is suggesting that these bacteria in our gut might have a significant influence on our brain functions.

Our Gut

The gut is often referred to as the “second brain,” as it is the only organ to develop its own independent nervous system which consists an intricate network of 100 million neurons embedded in the gut wall. In fact, even the vagus nerve (which runs all the way from the brain to the abdomen) between the gut and the brain is to be severed, it can function on its own for a while.

When we are born, our gut is sterile. As we grow up, we develop a distinctive and diverse brew of bacterial species as determined by genetics and bacteria that lives around us. These gut bacteria help to regulate digestion and metabolismextract and make vitamins and other nutrients from food that you eat. They also help to program the body’s immune system.

Hundreds of neurochemicals that the brain uses to regulate basic physiological processes as well as mental processes such as learning, memory and mood are also produced by the bacteria in our gut. For example, gut bacteria manufacture about 95 percent of the body’s supply of serotonin, which influences both mood and GI activity.

Studies in Animals 

Researchers experimented with mice noticed that when they gave different groups of mice specific cocktails of antibiotics that changes the bacteria in their guts, they found that the mice were changed drastically in terms of behaviour. Mice that were normally shy became very bold and vice-versa. What was interesting was that they revert to their normal behaviours once they were no more fed those cocktails of probiotics.

An additional study found that when mice who exhibited “behaviors similar to some of the symptoms of autism in humans,” were administered probiotics, their symptoms greatly disapproved, and in some cases, disappeared altogether.

However, researchers have not proven if it will have the same effects in humans as shown in mice.

Studies in Humans

One study, conducted at UCLA, saw researchers giving one one group of women yogurt with probiotics, another group a similar product, but without probiotics, and the last group with no food product. They then tracked the brain activity of these women when they were at rest and when they were participated in an emotion-recognition test.  They found that women who consumed the probiotic yoghurt experienced less anxiety and stress, compared to those women who didn’t consume probiotics.

Do you remember that the gut bacteria also helps in the immune system? Numerous studies have shown that stress actually suppress the work of the beneficial gut bacteria. This leads to vulnerability to diseases and negative emotions as it feeds back to the central nervous system. For example, gut bacteria manufacture about 95 percent of the body’s supply of serotonin, which  is usually thought to be the main contributor to feelings of well-being and happiness. Serotonin is usually used as a treatment for ADHD  and depressed patients.

While research is still in their early stages, it shows promise that a balanced and healthy diet that supports the growth of beneficial gut bacteria aids the brain.
