When one’s child is bright but not necessarily gifted, it often gives the parents hope that their children can be trained to be ‘gifted’ like. Indeed, many parents who harbour such hopes send their children to early enrichment programs such as “right brain training” and “whole-brain activities”. Yet, is it possible?

Apparently, it is.

A bright child is one who is able to form connections in the cognitive area much faster than the average child. Though they may lack the capabilities  and a series of superior skills at an extremely young age – if the bright child is enhanced in their intellectual ability, they may become more efficient and better endowed to lead a life like that of a gifted child.

Many parents have a number of misconceptions about their children being gifted. I have written an earlier article here where parents are often confused between “bright” and “gifted” child. Some children may show great promise at the start but only to fizzle out later. Others are gifted in other areas instead of math and science but are never picked up.

How does One go about it?

Before we start, parents must know that not every child who achieves very good grades is a genius or highly gifted, but they could just simply be very dedicated and hard workers. There are some who argue that I.Q tests can be very biased towards logical thinkers as well and this may not go down well with many children who could be gifted in the arts.

If you want to enhance your child’s intellectual capabilities, here are some skills that you need to take note. Please take note that the effectiveness of these skills vary a lot according to the instructions taught according to individual levels.

Ensure that your child has a wide range of vocabulary. While many parents think that the child needs to know many bombastic words, this may not necessarily be so. Rather, your child needs to know the appropriateness of the vocabulary used in context and guessing the meaning of the words used in abstraction . If your child loves to talk, it may aid them even more as acquiring a wide range of expressions and words can assist them to improve their discussions with others.

Complex Thinking Ability

This ability is to be able to allow your child to have higher order thinking skills. In short, your child is supposed to see multiple connections towards a situation and is able to analyse and question them. With the PSLE and O level shifting towards this trend, it is actually necessary for ALL students to be able to pick up this skill. One way to start is to ask your children young is to design and weave their own imaginary stories and anecdotes. This will help them hone their skills of imagination and thinking abilit

One cannot escape math if one is to develop better logical skills. To develop them, symbolic thoughts in children can come easily, when they improve their basic mathematical skills like arithmetic. Working on math will help develop analytical and fine-tune thinking processes. Logic problems, analogies, visual models and balance scales will aid your child to see situations from multiple angles.

Help develop the ability to create unusual shapes, patterns and figures by using blocks, clay and crayons. These exercises will help them streamline their thinking abilities, analytical power along with reasoning. Gifted children are experts in thinking, analytical and reasoning power.

A caring parent can mean a lot to a child, whether gifted or bright. Bright children could be truly gifted, when they fine tune their attitude and outlook. Let them know and realize that they can become the most intelligent and smart children in the world with concerted and dedicated effort. As a parent, you should understand their mind and attitude. Just make sure to focus on their real strengths and weaknesses before acting on your goals.
